CERN Moves Thousands of Industrial Systems to Debian After Decades in the Red Hat Ecosystem

CERN is preparing to move more than 2,200 industrial computers and embedded systems to Debian 13, marking a significant change for an organisation that has spent decades relying heavily on Linux distributions from the Red Hat ecosystem.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research, best known for operating the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), revealed details of the migration during the recent MiniDebConf in Winterthur, Switzerland.

CERN has a particularly long history with Red Hat-based Linux distributions. In the early 2000s, it worked alongside Fermilab on Scientific Linux, a distribution built from Red Hat Enterprise Linux sources and designed primarily for scientific and research environments. CERN later began moving away from Scientific Linux, adopting CentOS 7 as its next major Linux platform in 2015.

That relationship changed considerably after Red Hat altered the CentOS project and shifted its focus towards CentOS Stream. CERN subsequently recommended AlmaLinux alongside Fermilab as a standard Linux distribution for scientific experiments, while continuing to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux for applications requiring commercial vendor support.

For its industrial computing environment, however, CERN has now chosen a different path.

According to engineers presenting the project at MiniDebConf, CentOS Stream was initially considered as the most straightforward continuation of CERN’s existing infrastructure. One of the decisive issues was the move towards newer x86-64 processor requirements within the Red Hat ecosystem.

In particular, CERN highlighted the use of the `-march=x86-64-v2` compilation target as what engineers described as the “straw that broke the camel’s back”. For an organisation operating large quantities of specialised equipment with unusually long service lives, dropping support for older processors can effectively force otherwise functional hardware into premature retirement.

CERN engineers described this as a form of “forced obsolescence”.

This is particularly relevant in industrial and scientific environments. Unlike ordinary desktop computers or cloud servers, control systems attached to laboratory equipment may remain in service for many years, and replacing the computer can involve considerably more than simply swapping one server for another. Hardware interfaces, specialised electronics, certification requirements and custom control software can all make unnecessary upgrades expensive and disruptive.

Debian’s broad hardware compatibility and relatively conservative approach therefore made it an attractive alternative.

The transition has not been entirely straightforward. CERN engineers identified several shortcomings in Debian’s existing infrastructure, particularly around automated package building and publishing. They also encountered tooling that does not handle multiple versions of the same package as conveniently as their previous environment.

Nevertheless, CERN intends to complete the migration of more than 2,200 industrial computers and embedded systems to Debian 13 by the end of 2026.

The move does not mean that CERN is abandoning Red Hat-based distributions throughout the organisation. CERN’s current Linux documentation continues to list both AlmaLinux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux as officially supported platforms, including the latest AlmaLinux 10 and RHEL 10 releases.

Instead, the Debian deployment represents a major change within CERN’s industrial and embedded computing infrastructure — and an unusually high-profile endorsement of Debian for systems where stability, long hardware lifetimes and backwards compatibility matter more than chasing the latest processor baseline.

For Debian, that is quite a deployment to add to its CV.
